Why Drywall Tape Needs Multiple Coats
Drywall tape reinforces the joint between two gypsum boards. Without tape, natural building movement, temperature changes, humidity variation, vibration, and structural settling can cause joint compound to crack along panel seams.
But tape alone cannot create a smooth wall surface. Even when embedded correctly, the tape has thickness. If it is only covered with one thin layer of compound, the tape edges and seam profile may become visible after paint is applied.
Multiple coats of joint compound solve this problem by gradually widening the finished area.
For example, a typical tapered drywall joint may start with a narrow taped seam. The next coat extends several inches beyond the tape on both sides. The final coat is applied even wider, creating a low-angle transition between the joint and the face of the gypsum board.
This gradual feathering is especially important under directional lighting. Light shining across a wall—such as sunlight from a window, recessed lighting, wall washers, or decorative sconces—can reveal even small surface differences.
The Standard Three-Coat Drywall Finishing Process
First Coat: Embed the Tape
The first step is to apply joint compound directly over the drywall seam and embed the tape while the compound is still wet.
For paper tape, spread a consistent bed of compound over the joint, press the tape into the compound, and use a drywall knife to wipe away excess material. The tape should be fully supported by compound, with no dry areas, air bubbles, wrinkles, or loose edges.
All-purpose joint compound is commonly used for embedding because it provides useful adhesion and can be used across multiple finishing stages. Some contractors prefer taping-grade compound for the first coat because it is designed for strong tape adhesion, while lightweight topping compounds are often used for later coats because they are easier to spread and sand.

A properly applied fill coat should remain smooth and relatively thin while creating enough coverage to hide the tape.
At this stage, the seam may still be slightly visible. That is normal. The final coat will widen and refine the joint profile.
For butt joints, which occur where two square drywall ends meet, the second coat must usually be wider than on a tapered joint. Because butt joints do not have recessed factory edges, they naturally create a raised area. The solution is not to apply thick joint compound directly over the center.
