What You’ll Need

Step 4: Apply the Second Fill Coat
After the taped joints are dry, lightly scrape away ridges, dried edges, or debris. You can sand lightly if needed, but do not sand aggressively enough to damage the tape.
Use a 10-inch knife for the second coat:
Apply a thin coat over the taped seam.
Extend the compound beyond the first coat on both sides.
Keep the center filled while feathering the outer edges.
Use long, consistent strokes to minimize knife marks.
Cover screw heads again with a second thin coat.
The second coat should be wider than the tape and first coat. A wider application gradually transitions the raised joint area into the flat drywall surface, making the seam less visible under primer and paint. Professional finishers commonly widen this stage to approximately 8–10 inches, depending on the joint and board edge profile.
Step 5: Apply the Final Finish Coat
Once the fill coat has dried, scrape or lightly sand any defects. Then use a 12-inch finishing knife to apply the final coat.
The final coat should be:
Thin rather than heavy
Wider than the second coat
Smoothly feathered at both edges
Free of ridges, lap marks, and obvious tool lines

After drying, finish one side of the inside corner at a time. This reduces the risk of damaging the opposite side while working.
Outside Corners
Outside corners generally require metal, vinyl, or paper-faced corner bead for impact protection and a straight edge. Install the bead according to the manufacturer’s method, then apply compound over both flanges in thin coats.
Use progressively wider knives for each coat. Keep the compound feathered away from the corner’s nose so the edge remains crisp and straight.
Butt Joints
Butt joints are more difficult than recessed factory joints because there is no tapered edge to accommodate compound. Apply wider coats over butt joints—sometimes 18 inches or more overall—to reduce the visible hump.
For high-visibility walls, avoid placing butt joints where strong directional light will strike across the surface.
Step 6: Sand and Inspect
Let the final coat dry completely. Sand lightly using 100–120 grit sandpaper or a drywall sanding screen.
Do not sand simply to make the wall feel smooth. Sand only to remove:
